What does a good ski boot have to do? Most skiers would probably answer something like that: The perfect ski boot should perform its function so well that I barely notice it while skiing, and I can enjoy every moment. To make sure we skiers don't have to think about our boots as much as possible, ski boot manufacturers have to put a lot of brain grease into the development of their products. Matteo Murer, Product Manager for Tecnica Skiboots, tells us in an interview how the Tecnica-Mach ski boots combine expertise and craftsmanship to give every skier the perfect moment on the slopes.
Anatomical construction for fit and support
The most important characteristics that a ski boot needs to avoid attracting negative attention are certainly fit and hold. Matteo Murer agrees: "Fit and support in ski boots are extremely important for having fun and skiing safely," he says and adds: "If, for example, ankles and heels are to be tight, then the shell and inner boot must be preformed accordingly. The more and more precise, the better - but it also becomes more and more complex for us. This year, we have raised this art of shoemaking to a new level."
The result of the development work is immediately apparent: "At first glance, the anatomical shape of the shell of the shoes in the Mach series is striking," explains Murer, "The inner shoes are also completely tailor-made and now look almost as anatomical as a plaster cast of the leg - but they are made from many different materials. Always perfect for the particular spot".
But how can a shoe, no matter how anatomically shaped, fit any skier? "Maurer explains, "So that the boot fits every skier despite its anatomical shape, we offer different volumes in every boot size. For wide, narrow, high or flat feet".
Tecnica Mach 1 130: power transmission, control, comfort
Tecnica also thinks about the different skill levels of the skiers. The new Tecnica Mach 1 LV 130 is certainly particularly outstanding this winter, says Maurer: "This is already a boot for highly sporty riders with narrow feet, for whom fit is also important and who ski powerfully and precisely. This is why we have also developed a construction in which the shell and inner boot are worked in different material thicknesses in the calf area of the upper on the inside and outside. The inner side is therefore considerably harder than the outer side - for direct power transmission in the turn control. On the outside, however, we were able to save weight".
But also for riders who have equally high sporting ambitions but not quite as narrow feet, the Tecnica Mach 1 MV 130 for medium feet and the Tecnica Mach 1 HV 130 for wide feet offer shoes that stand for highly sporty piste skiing and the perfect combination of direct power transmission, optimum control and comfort.
Drivers who prefer a more moderate driving style will find their model in the Tecnica Mach 1 MV 110 for medium feet or in the Tecnica Mach 1 HV 110 for wider feet. Both models have the same features as the top models, but are a little less hard on the forward bend.
Tecnica Mach 1 W: Warm feet thanks to merino wool
The Tecnica Mach women's shoes also have the same characteristics as the men's shoes - and even more: Tecnica produces the inner shoes from merino wool with Celliant microcrystals for the narrow and very sporty Tecnica Mach 1 LV 105 W as well as for the slightly more moderate and wider Tecnica Mach 1 MV 95 W. The inner shoes are made of merino wool with Celliant microcrystals. They convert body heat into infrared radiation, stimulate blood circulation and keep feet warm. An additional highlight is the integrated lift-lock system, which allows the buckles to remain at a 45° angle after opening, making it easier to put them on and take them off.
Perfect adaptability thanks to Dual Density and C.A.S. shell
But what if the boot still doesn't fit perfectly? Matteo Murer also has an answer to this question: "If the foot is very special, we can finish both the shell and the inner shoe completely. This means: warming and shaping, sanding or denting - until everything fits perfectly. This is the demand we have for each of our customers. And our trained specialist retailers implement this on site."
In order to achieve this as well as possible, Tecnica has developed an inner shoe in which the materials have different densities (dual density). This is optimal for longer durability and any kind of adjustment. Thanks to the choice of material, the compression of the inner boot is significantly reduced over time, thus maintaining the fit for a long time.
The C.A.S. shells of the Mach series from Tecnica also have a special feature with the small notches in the surface, through which the material is continuously heated in the places where most problems can occur when fitting the shoes and the adapted shape is retained for a long time.
As you can see, Tecnica has taken every detail into consideration so that we skiers can concentrate fully on enjoying the next run.
